Tips on How to Wear a Hat

  • Print

Hats provide a comfortable and attractive alternative to wigs and scarves for those with hair loss.

The problem with hats is that some women simply don't know how to wear them. They think hats are unbecoming to them and that belief becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Like anything else, hats deserve a fair chance. “tlc” believes that anyone can become a "hat person".

Practical concerns...comfort comes first.

  • Scratchy hats will not work for someone with hair loss, so look for soft cotton linings. For unlined hats (and wigs), consider investing in a soft Cool Comfort Cap Liner that will quickly absorb perspiration and wick it away to keep you cool and comfortable.
  • Wear the Liner with the seams facing out, so that only the soft, seamless side touches your scalp.

Correct size is another consideration.

  • Look for hats with an adjustable size feature.
  • If your head is small, consider adding a Padded Cap Liner under your hats.
  • The Liner will provide desirable fullness and a snug fit. It will also provide a seamless lining under hats.
  • A Peel-and-Stick Adhesive Hat Sizer is another option. This terry band sticks to the inside of a hat to make the hat smaller. For maximum size reduction, 2 Sizers can be added to fit all the way around the inside circumference of the hat.

Hats must be deep enough to give adequate coverage.

  • A deeper cut and a snug fit will prevent embarrassing gaping at the sides of the hat.
  • For extra security, and to add variety, wear a solid color Headband or a print Scarfband under your hat. A Scarfband tied around the crown of a hat is also a pretty touch.

A little bit of hair can make a big difference.

  • Many women who lose their hair are concerned about the lack of hair in front of their ears. This bare spot is especially obvious when wearing glasses. Our natural looking Hairline Accents™ solve this problem. Easily attached with a peel-and-stick adhesive backing, they are made of real hair that can be cut and styled the way you want it.
  • Halos are another easy, inexpensive way to get the look of hair while enjoying the comfort of a nice, soft hat. They are open at the top to keep you cool all day.

Select a hat that works with your face and body type.

  • Newsboys and medium brim hats look good on most people. Those with round faces should avoid rounded crowns.
  • Wear a Headband or Scarf under your hat so you can angle it, which will add length to your face. Longer earrings and Halos also help.
  • If your face is longer, wider brims will be more flattering.
  • If your jaw line is too strong, emphasize your eyes to draw attention away from it.
  • Larger women should avoid small hats that look out of proportion to the shape of their bodies.
  • Small women should avoid very large hats that overpower them.

Regardless of your shape face or body, there are two universal truths:

  1. Don't wear your hat perched on the top of your head as though you’re having second thoughts about wearing it at all. Pull it down low on your forehead and wear it with conviction.
  2. Wear something terrific on your hat. Find a fabulous brooch you haven't worn for years or treat yourself to an inexpensive new pin. Great costume jewelry can often be found without spending a lot of time or money.

Give hats a chance. As one of our customers said, she had nothing to lose and it turned out she looked better in hats than she ever dreamed she could.

She wore one every day to work and everyone looked forward to seeing what she would come up with that day. Many female co-workers asked her where she found such cute hats. (“tlc”, of course! )

Losing your hair and getting chemo is not pleasant, no matter how you look at it. But hats can add a bit of fun and glamour and you may find yourself reaching for a hat long after your hair has grown back .
